Academic Jobs in CS in Portugal
This is some information about jobs in Portugal informally compiled from faculty. This is not
comprehensive, and only the parts that obviously contrast from the U.S.
system are highlighted. As always, check with your advisor and
others to get the skinny on schools and strategize about your
application process.
Finding out about jobs
The ministry for science and higher education has a central website, the Researcher's Mobility Portal,
that lists research jobs. The hiring calendar differs for
different schools so jobs are posted throughout the year as they become
available.
Applying and Interviewing
All Ph.D. degrees have to be formally recognized by a Portuguese
university. At most places, this is a formality, but at others
there is some paperwork involved. Just be aware. The
interview process varies from university to university, but in general,
there is no presentation to the whole department. Rather, the
interview is more like an industry interview. The candidate just
meets with the recruiting committee. Sometimes, the candidate
gives a talk to the committee, but often it's a more conventional
interview.
Language
Portuguese requirements vary from school to school. Some universities
already have some international faculty and English is fine.
Others will require Portuguese.
Top-tier schools
There isn't much research being done in companies in Portugal,
and the
private universities focus on teaching. Therefore, for research-focused
jobs, the best places to look are the public universities. There is no
central ranking of CS departments in Portugal. Here is a link to
a file with admissions scores for all Portuguese universities in 2007 in Portuguese. Otherwise, talk to people.
