Dr.-Ing. Istemi Ekin Akkus

Research Scientist at Nokia Bell Labs

I am a research scientist at Nokia Bell Labs in Stuttgart, Germany. My research interests lie in the intersection of computer networks and distributed systems. Currently, I am working on cloud computing, edge computing and decentralization.

Recently, I have been working on serverless computing. I am one of the main architects and developers of KNIX MicroFunctions, which is now opensource [code].

Previously, I was a Ph.D. student at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems in Germany. My advisor was Paul Francis.

I visited the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at Berkeley from March 2014 until August 2014. I worked with Nicholas Weaver on privacy issues on the web. During my visit, I developed Priv3+ as a Firefox addon (which is now defunct; [code]) and later as a Google Chrome extension (which is now also defunct; [code]). Priv3+ prevents third party tracking via cookies, but enables social networking features on websites without requiring a blacklist.

During the summer of 2012, I was a research intern at Microsoft Research India in Bangalore. I worked with Saikat Guha on a personal and privacy-preserving (i.e., not talking with the cloud) digital assistant/recommendation system.
